CHANGES IN THE HONORS PROGRAMS IN THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS CHAPTER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2000-2002

Associate Dean Larry Carver, for Richard W. Lariviere, filed with the secretary of the Faculty Council the following changes in the Honors Programs in the College of Liberal Arts chapter of The Undergraduate Catalog, 2000-2002. The changes were approved by the dean and by the liberal arts faculty on a no-protest basis on February 6, 2002. The secretary has classified the proposal as legislation of exclusive application and primary interest to a single college or school

The proposal, having first been approved by Official Publications, was received from the College of Liberal Arts on February 21, 2002, and was sent to the Committee on Undergraduate Degree Program Review from the Office of the General Faculty on February 25, 2002. The committee forwarded the proposed changes to the Office of the General Faculty on March 19, 2002, recommending approval. The authority to grant final approval on behalf of the General Faculty resides with the Faculty Council.

If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council.

To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by March 29, 2002.

On page 242, in the section ACADEMIC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES, make the following change:

African and African American Studies Honors Program

Ethnic studies majors who plan to seek special honors in African and African American studies should apply to the undergraduate adviser for admission to the honors program no later than two semesters before they expect to graduate. A University grade point average of at least 3.00 is required for admission. The requirements for graduation with special honors are (1) African and African American Studies 679H, Honors Tutorial Course, with a grade of at least B in each half; (2) satisfactory performance on an oral presentation of honors paper research; (3) a University grade point average of at least 3.00 and a grade point average of at least 3.50 in the coursework required for the concentration in African and African American studies and for honors; and (4) completion at the University of at least sixty semester hours of coursework counted toward the degree.

Rationale: The change in minimum Grade Point Average for transfer applicants reflects current practice, which reflects the accomplishments of current applicants.

On page 242, in the section ACADEMIC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES, make the following changes:

American Studies Honors Program

Majors who plan to seek special honors in American studies should apply to the honors adviser for admission to the honors program at least two semesters before they expect to graduate. A University grade point average of at least 3.00 is required for admission. In addition to the requirements of the major, requirements for graduation with special honors are (1) American Studies 679H, Honors Tutorial Course, with a grade of at least B in each half; (2) satisfactory performance on a comprehensive honors examination; (3) a University grade point average of at least 3.00 and a grade point average of at least 3.50 in the coursework required for the major [in American studies] and for honors; and (4) completion at the University of at least sixty semester hours of coursework counted toward the degree.

Ancient History and Classical Civilization Honors Program

A University grade point average of at least 3.00 is required for admission, as is a grade point average of at least 3.50 in all coursework required for the major that the student has completed. These twelve hours must include Italian 365, Italian 375, or Italian Civilization 360. Philosophy Honors Program

The Philosophy Honors Program provides an opportunity for good students to carry out original projects in the field. Philosophy majors and Plan II majors with philosophy concentrations are eligible for honors work if they have a University grade point average of at least 3.00 and have completed Philosophy 329K or 329L or a course equivalent to either on entering their last year. Application forms are available in the Department of Philosophy Undergraduate Office, Waggener 415.

The requirements for graduation with special honors are (1) Philosophy 679H, Honors Tutorial Course, which consists in research and writing to produce a senior thesis; the student must earn a grade of at least B in both 679HA and 679HB; (2) a passing grade on an oral examination on the topic of the thesis, broadly construed, conducted by the thesis supervisor and a second reader; (3) a University grade point average of at least 3.00 and a grade point average [in philosophy] of at least 3.50 in the coursework required for the major and for honors; and (4) completion at the University of at least sixty semester hours of coursework counted toward the degree. Philosophy 679H is taken in addition to the usual requirements of the major.

The application deadline is one week before the first registration period for the semester in which the student wants to enter the program.
