REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE TO NOMINATE FACULTY COUNCIL
OFFICERS FOR 2002-2003 (D 1968-1969)
Michael H. Granof.
The members of the nominating committee were Michael Granof (accounting,
chair), Patrick Davis (pharmacy), Linda Ferreira-Buckley (English),
Bruce Palka (mathematics), and Cynthia Shelmerdine (classics).
Before introducing the nominees, Professor Granof, chair of the
2002-2003 Council, made several observations about the Council. "The
Council is the conscience of the University. Our role is to defend
and positively assert its values, to protect free speech
and other aspects of academic freedom, to uphold academic standards
and promote excellence in teaching and research, to assure that
resources are wisely spent, and to elevate the overall quality
of
academic life. Recently, one of the deans expressed a commonly
held view: I stopped attending meetings of the Council, he said;
they
never do anything. And he got it wrong. Like a fire department,
the Council is in fact most effective when it is seemingly doing
nothing. When it is able to prevent fires, rather than to fight
them. We work best when we have a cooperative relationship with
the administration, not an adversarial one. So, if our meetings
are tedious, and deal primarily with routine matters, then so much
the better."
