PROPOSED CREATION OF A MAJOR IN JAZZ PERFORMANCE FOR
THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN THE COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS
CHAPTER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2004-2006
Dean Robert Freeman of the College of Fine Arts has filed with
the secretary of the Faculty Council the following addition of
a major in jazz performance for the degree of Bachelor of Music
in the College of Fine Arts chapter in The Undergraduate
Catalog, 2004-2006. The faculty of the school approved the
proposed changes on November 8, 2001. The dean approved the changes
on October 8, 2002, and submitted them to the secretary on January
29, 2003. The secretary has classified this proposal as legislation
of exclusive application and primary interest to a single college
or school.
The edited proposal was received from the Office of Official Publications
on February 6, 2003, and was sent to the Committee on Undergraduate Degree
Program Review from the Office of the General Faculty on February 7,
2003. The committee forwarded the proposed changes to the Office of the
General Faculty on March 3, 2003, recommending approval. The authority
to grant final approval on behalf of the General Faculty resides with
the Faculty Council.
If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the
date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved
by the Faculty Council. If objection is filed within the prescribed period,
the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next
meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the
Faculty Council.
To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General
Faculty by noon on March 17, 2003.

On page 211, in the College of Fine Arts chapter of The
Undergraduate Catalog, 2002-2004, under the heading DEGREES,
add the following at the end of section REQUIREMENTS
FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF MUSIC:

JAZZ PERFORMANCE MAJOR
This program is offered in the following instruments: double bass, drum
set, guitar, piano, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, and vibraphone.

majors: At least thirty semester hours as described on
pages 206-207.

Piano principals: Eighteen semester
hours, consisting of three semesters of
major instrument course 210, two semesters

two semesters of major instrument course

Each student must also complete a recital of
compositions and/or arrangements. This recital
is given in the senior year and must be approved
by the jazz faculty.

Fifty-one or fifty-three semester hours consisting
of Music 605, 411, 612, 313M, 313N, 214C, 221J,
226J, 226K, 228G, 228J, 228L, 328M, three semesters
of 228P, 329E, and 343J; principals in instruments
other than piano must also complete Music 228K.

Music ensemble: Eight semester hours of music
ensemble courses as explained in “School
of Music Special Requirements,” page 203.

either within or outside the School of Music.

Total requirements for the degree: 121 semester hours as
outlined above, and ensemble as stated on page 203.
Rationale: This
proposal is intended only to define more clearly
a program which has existed for over seventeen years
in the context of the Bachelor of Music degrees (composition
major, jazz studies concentration and orchestral
instruments performance major, jazz studies concentration).
Thus this jazz studies program will be implemented
with existing faculty and facilities.
