CHANGES INREQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE WITH A MAJOR IN SOCIOLOGY IN THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS CHAPTER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2004-2006

Dean Richard W. Lariviere of the College of Liberal Arts has filed with the secretary of the Faculty Council proposed changes in requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in sociology in the College of Liberal Arts chapter in The Undergraduate Catalog, 2004-2006. The faculty of the college and the dean approved the proposed changes on a no-protest basis on November 17, 2003, and submitted them to the secretary on November 19, 2003. The secretary has classified this proposal as legislation of exclusive application and primary interest to a single college or school.

The edited proposal was received from the Office of Official Publications on January 30, 2004, and was sent to the Committee on Undergraduate Degree Program Review from the Office of the General Faculty on February 2, 2004. The committee forwarded the proposed changes to the Office of the General Faculty on March 10, 2004, recommending approval. The authority to grant final approval on behalf of the General Faculty resides with the Faculty Council.

If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If an objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council.

To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by March 26, 2004.

CHANGES INREQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE WITH A MAJOR IN SOCIOLOGY IN THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS CHAPTER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2004-2006

On page 264 under the heading DEGREES in the BACHELOR OF ARTS, PLAN I section in the College of Liberal Arts chapter of The Undergraduate Catalog, 2002-2004, make the following changes:


Sociology

Major: At least [twenty-four] twenty-seven semester hours of sociology, including Sociology 302, 317L, 317M, and 379M. At least [twelve] fifteen hours must be in upper-division courses. Sociology majors must earn grades of at least C in Sociology 302, 317L, and 317M. To enroll in Sociology 317M for a second time, a student must have the consent of a sociology undergraduate adviser. Students may not enroll in Sociology 317M more than twice.

Minor for sociology majors:Twelve semester hours, including at least six hours of upper-division coursework, in any one other field of study in the University. Six of the required hours must be taken in residence.


RATIONALE: In order to strengthen our degree requirements and to increase the level of proficiency of our sociology majors. The limitation on SOC 317M enrollment will ensure that all of our students complete this course in a timely manner. All changes will promote a higher level of academic achievement among our majors.
