FACULTY COUNCIL RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM
THE TUITION POLICY ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR IMPLEMENTING AN ACADEMIC SUSTAINABILITY
TUITION
Marvin L. Hackert (professor, chemistry and biochemistry) submitted
the following resolution on behalf of the Faculty Budget Advisory Committee.
The secretary has classified this resolution as general legislation.
The Faculty Council will take action on the resolution at its meeting
on October 20, 2003.

FACULTY COUNCIL RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE RECOMMENDATIONS
FROM THE TUITION POLICY ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR IMPLEMENTING AN ACADEMIC
SUSTAINABILITY TUITION
Whereas, state revenues to The University of Texas have
decreased substantially when adjusted for the impact of inflation, and
indeed have lagged behind other colleges and universities within Texas,
the consequences of which have been an inability of the University to:

perform routine maintenance and renovation of classrooms,
laboratories, and other teaching facilities; |
|
|
reduce the student-teacher ratio to a more acceptable level; |
|
|
pursue academic initiatives as new areas develop; and |
|
|
maintain a salary structure that enables the University
to attract and retain top-notch faculty and staff and keeps us competitive
with other universities both within the United States and abroad;
and |
Whereas, the value of a degree from The University of Texas depends in
part upon the present and future reputation of the institution; and
Whereas, similar increases are taking place at institutions across the
country, and even with the added Academic Sustainability Tuition, the
tuition and fees charged to our students will be considerably lower than
those charged by many of our peer institutions in other states; and
Whereas, it is noted that a portion of the increase will be used to cover
the additional costs of students in need; therefore, be it
Resolved, that the Faculty Council hereby endorses the recommendations
of the President's Tuition Policy Advisory Committee (D
2717-2728) for
implementing an Academic Sustainability Tuition for Spring 2004 and the
2004/2005 academic year, as presented to the Council on October 20, 2003.
