MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE GENERAL FACULTY FOR 2004-2005

The regular meeting of the General Faculty for the academic year 2004-2005 was held on Wednesday, October 20, 2004, at 2:15 p.m. in the Main Building, room 212. President Larry R. Faulkner presided.

I.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES.

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the General Faculty for 2003-2004, October 20, 2003, were approved (D 2804-2805).
II.
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE FACULTY COUNCIL, 2003-2004.

There was no discussion on the report, which was published as D 3421-3454.
III.
DISCUSSION OF ANNUAL REPORT — None.
IV.
COMMENTS BY AND QUESTIONS TO THE PRESIDENT. Following recent practice, the President’s State of the University Address was given as part of the University’s anniversary celebration, The University at 121, on October 6, 2004. The Address is reproduced in D 3535-3543.

President Faulkner discussed the Commission of 125 Report, which can be found on the Web at http://www.utexas.edu/com125/final.html. He said the University community should appreciate that the report was an expression of the commission members’ “hopes and ambitions” for the institution after their spending two years of careful study and discussion. He said it was important that the University community consider what the report included and how its recommendations might impact the institution’s future. President Faulkner noted that generally the report was not prescriptive but articulated broad goals for the beneficial development of the University over the next few decades.

VI.
REPORTS OF THE GENERAL FACULTY, COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS, AND COMMITTEES.

A. Committee to Nominate a Candidate for Secretary of the General Faculty.

Professor Linda Reichl (physics), chair of the Faculty Council and chair of the nominating committee, nominated Sue A. Greninger, associate professor, human ecology.

Also serving on the committee were Jacqueline Angel (LBJ school), Marvin L. Hackert (chemistry and biochemistry), Martha Hilley (music), Archie Holmes (computer and electrical engineering), Dean P. Neikirk (electrical and computer engineering), and Alba Ortiz (special education).

VII.
NEW BUSINESS

A. Election of the Secretary of the General Faculty.

Professor Greninger was elected to serve for the calendar year 2005.

IX. AJOURNMENT.

The meeting adjourned at 2:25 p.m.
