the following name change to the Division of Rhetoric and Writing. This change

as legislation of exclusive application and primary interest to a single college

below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council.
If objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented
to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must
be signed by a member of the Faculty Council.
To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty

NAME CHANGE TO THE DIVISION OF RHETORIC AND
WRITING IN THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS CHAPTER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE
CATALOG, 2008-2010
| On page 418 of the Undergraduate Catalog, 2006-2008, under
the DIVISION OF RHETORIC AND WRITING section,
make the following change. |
Explanation of the change requested:
Change the name of the administrative unit Division of Rhetoric and
Writing to Department of Rhetoric and Writing.
Rationale:
When, in 1993, The University created the Division of Rhetoric and Composition
(which became Rhetoric and Writing in fall 2005), the unit did not have
a major and thus could not be designated a “department.” We
have remained a “division,” even though we always have been
an independent unit with our own budget, faculty lines, classified staff,
etc.
Although technically accurate, the name “division” has
been misleading to students and University faculty and staff, who assume
that we must be a division of another department (e.g., a division of
the English department). For this reason, faculty and staff in our unit
have long anticipated the opportunity to become the Department of Rhetoric
and Writing. Because the undergraduate major in Rhetoric and Writing
took effect on September 1, 2006, we now maintain that this change should
be the obvious next step.
Other Colleges/Schools affected:
The administrative unit is being renamed. No program names or course prefixes
will be changed. No change in the existing organizational chart is required.
