PROPOSED CHANGE TO THE STANDARD OF WORK REQUIRED AND THE SCHOLASTIC POLICIES IN THE
SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING CHAPTER OF
THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2008-2010


Dean Ben Streetman of the Cockrell School of Engineering has filed with the secretary of the Faculty Council the following proposed change to the standard of work required and scholastic policies in the School of Engineering chapter in the Undergraduate Catalog, 2008-2010. The faculty of the college approved the changes on April 23, 2007, and the dean approved the changes on September 12, 2007. The secretary has classified this proposal as legislation of exclusive interest to a single college or school.

The Committee on Undergraduate Degree Program Review recommended approval of the change on April 14, 2008, and forwarded the proposed changes to the Office of the General Faculty. The Faculty Council has the authority to approve this legislation on behalf of the General Faculty. The authority to grant final approval on this legislation resides with the Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs.

If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If an objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council.

To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by noon on April 23, 2008.

This does not change any degree program; it is an academic policy change. With this change we hope to be more proactive in identifying students in academic difficulty earlier and making the student aware of available resources.

GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR THE CHANGE(S):
A student could be enrolled in some majors for as many as three semesters before accumulating six semester hours in the major area of study while falling below a 2.00 GPA in required technical courses. This change allows the school to be more proactive in identifying students in academic difficulty earlier and making the student aware of available resources.
