GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR THE CHANGE(S):
After a conducting a study of undergraduate art history programs at ten peer institutions, faculty propose to bring the studio art requirement on the degree plan in line with peer undergraduate art history programs in order to provide art history majors with a more meaningful art experience and appropriate skill set. Deleting the heavy skills-based two- and three-dimensional design courses and replacing three hours with a drawing class will also make it possible for art history majors to satisfy this requirement via study abroad programs in the field, where drawing is more conveniently taught. Moving the other resulting three hours to the elective field will provide additional interdisciplinary study hours and/or hours that could be used later for future undergraduate curricular reforms. These changes fall within the curricular standards and academic guidelines of our accrediting agency, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
