GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR THE CHANGE(S):
The original intent of the requirement of Senior Seminar (TD 351S) in all of our undergraduate programs was to provide for a common writing component “capstone” experience for all of our majors. Over the years, faculty have discovered that a common experience for our seniors was neither practical to implement nor of optimal benefit to students given that their professional and academic goals were so diverse at this stage of their education.

The intent of the proposed changes is to remove the requirement of Senior Seminar (TD 351S) in all of our undergraduate degree plans and replace that requirement with an additional three hours of required upper-division coursework in theatre and dance. This change would provide students an opportunity to determine, with their adviser, the experiences most helpful to their individual goals and development in their senior year.

In lieu of TD 351S, the department plans on offering a sufficient number of upper-division “significant writing component” topics classes so that students who still wish to satisfy both requirements through one class should be able to do so.
