5712 DOCUMENTS OF THE GENERAL FACULTY CHANGES TO THE BACHELOR OF ARTS IN GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES IN THE SCHOOL OF GEOSCIENCES CHAPTER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2008-2010 Dean Eric Barron of the Jackson School of Geosciences has filed with the secretary of the Faculty Council the following changes to the Bachelor of Arts in Geological Sciences in the School of Geosciences chapter in the Undergraduate Catalog, 2008-2010. The faculty of the school approved the changes on September 13, 2007, and the dean approved the proposed change on September 21, 2007. The secretary has classified this proposal as legislation of exclusive interest to a single college or school. The Committee on Undergraduate Degree Program Review recommended approval of the change on October 10, 2007, and forwarded the proposed changes to the Office of the General Faculty. The Faculty Council has the authority to approve this legislation on behalf of the General Faculty. The authority to grant final approval on this legislation resides with the Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If an objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council. To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by noon on October 22, 2007. Paper copies are available on request from the Office of the General Faculty, WMB 2.102, F9500. 5713 CHANGES TO THE BACHELOR OF ARTS IN GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES IN THE SCHOOL OF GEOSCIENCES CHAPTER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2008-2010 NAME OF DEGREE PROGRAM(S): BACHELOR OF ARTS IN GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES EXPLAIN CHANGE(S) TO DEGREE PROGRAM: We have added a signature course to the BA degree. Also, for all plans, we eliminated Geo 312K as a possible substitute for Geo 303 or 401. We provided a more accurate statement about the degree program and potential for future careers and removed Geo 422K and 428 as required upper division electives. Indicate pages in the Undergraduate Catalog where changes will be made. Pages 256-258. GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR THE CHANGE(S): We added a signature course to correspond to core curriculum reform recommendations for 2008-2010 catalog. Geo 312K is no longer taught. We changed the wording to provide better guidance for prospective majors. We added flexibility to the degree program by reducing the number of required upper division electives, thereby allowing students to choose from a wider range of upper division electives to match their interests and career goals.
