NAME OF DEGREE PROGRAM(S): BACHELOR OF ARTS WITH A MAJOR IN ARABIC LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
EXPLAIN CHANGE(S) TO DEGREE PROGRAM:
1. Restrict the number of upper-division conference course hours that may be applied to the major requirements to a maximum of six semester hours.
2. Increase the number of overall hours required for the major (from twenty-four to twenty-six) as well as the number of hours of specified language courses (from twelve to fourteen) to reflect the increase in credit hours for Third-Year Arabic I and II.

GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR THE CHANGE(S):
We feel that the structure provided by organized courses as well as the opportunities for discussion and peer interaction are invaluable to the student’s progress. A restriction on conference course hours is already in place for our Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies majors and has helped encourage students to utilize our ever-expanding course offerings to fulfill the degree requirements.

Our faculty has also determined that an increase in contact hours at the second- and third-year levels of language instruction will help us produce graduates with higher levels of Arabic proficiency, a primary goal of the Arabic program.
