MINUTES OF THE REGULAR FACULTY COUNCIL MEETING OF
April 13, 2009
IV. REPORT OF THE CHAIR.
Chair David Hillis (integrative biology) reported that President Powers was attending legislative meetings and thus unable to attend the Faculty Council meeting. Chair Hillis announced that the Faculty Council election results would be posted on the Council’s web site by April 14. He also reported that the proposal in the Texas Legislature to allow certain individuals to have concealed guns on campus had made it out of committee during the previous week. He said he had sent out an email to the faculty for informational purposes about the student walk out of classes and march to the Capitol planned for Thursday, April 16. He said he thought the faculty whose classes are scheduled during the hours of 11:00- 2:00 needed to be aware of this action as it might impact attendance. Although he had been asked many questions about faculty support of the protest, Chair Hillis wanted everyone to understand that the Faculty Council, as a body, cannot support or oppose any piece of legislation. However, he clarified that faculty members acting as individuals are free to choose to participate in the protest based on their own personal values and beliefs.
