Secretary Sue Greninger (human development and family sciences) introduced Professor Alan W. Friedman (English and Faculty Council Executive Committee member) and said he would make a special announcement. Professor Friedman said that he wanted to recognize and thank Chair David Hillis (integrated biology) on behalf of the Faculty Council for his outstanding leadership and service over the past year. Professor Friedman said Chair Elect Janet Staiger (radio-television-film) had asked him to stand in for her since she would miss the Council meeting due to out-of-town business travel. Professor Friedman summarized Chair Hillis’ contributions and accomplishments in a memorable tribute, which is included in Appendix A, and presented him with a remembrance gift in gratitude for his service on behalf of the Faculty Council. Professor Friedman described the gift as a combination clock/thermometer/hygrometer that is regulated several times daily by a radio signal from the government’s atomic clock in Colorado. Following a spirited round of applause by the Council, Chair Hillis expressed his appreciation for the gift and kind words to Professor Friedman as well as to the entire Council.

Secretary Greninger then presented her report, noting that the written version appears in D 7114-7123. She called attention to the relatively quick approval received from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board of legislation passed by the Council in January 2009 to update the core curriculum course lists for natural sciences part I and II (D 6802-6803). She also reported that the University of Texas System had approved the placement of recognition on student transcripts for completion of both the interdisciplinary program and the Bridging Disciplines Programs. She also noted the following individuals had been appointed by President Powers from the nominees submitted to him by the Faculty Council:

  • Dean Barbara White (social work) to the Intercollegiate Athletics Council for Women
  • Professor Diana DiNitto (social work) to the Intercollegiate Athletics Council for Men
  • Professor Minette Drumwright (advertising) to the University Co-op Board of Directors
