MINUTES OF THE REGULAR FACULTY COUNCIL MEETING OF October 27, 2008

III.
COMMUNICATION WITH THE PRESIDENT.

A. Comments by the President.

President William Powers said he had highlighted accomplishments and issues of importance to UT Austin in his State of the University address, including the upcoming legislative session and Capital Campaign. He said his administration had deliberated about proceeding with the campaign in this period of economic uncertainty but had decided to go ahead and launch the fund-raising effort because of its long-run importance to UT Austin’s future. He reported that donors and alumni had been very positive about the initiation of the campaign thus far, and it would be important that the University proceed carefully in recognition of the impact of the hurricane and overall economic conditions on the citizens of Texas. In keeping with the recommendations of the Commission of 125, he said the campaign had been organized in a manner to empower strong leadership at the departmental and college levels. This meant the central administration would be supportive, but the deans and department chairs would primarily drive the fund-raising efforts. He said he was excited about this approach and thought it would focus attention on what each programmatic area needed to promote its growth and enhanced academic excellence.

B. Questions to the President—None.
