7021 DOCUMENTS OF THE GENERAL FACULTY PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE BACHELOR OF ARTS IN ART, STUDIO ART MAJOR IN THE COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS CHAPTER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2010-2012 Dean Douglas Dempster of the College of Fine Arts has filed with the secretary of the Faculty Council the proposed changes to the Bachelor of Arts in Art, studio art major. The change will appear in the in the College of Fine Arts chapter in the Undergraduate Catalog, 2010-2012. The dean of the college approved the request on March 10, 2009. The secretary has classified this proposal as legislation of exclusive interest to one college or school. The Committee on Undergraduate Degree Program Review approved the proposal at its meeting on April 14, 2009, and forwarded the proposed changes to the Office of the General Faculty. The Faculty Council has the authority to approve this legislation on behalf of the General Faculty. The authority to grant final approval on this legislation resides with the executive vice chancellor of academic affairs. If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If an objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council. To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by five p.m. on April 28, 2009. PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE BACHELOR OF ARTS IN ART, STUDIO ART MAJOR IN THE COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS CHAPTER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2010-2012 NAME OF DEGREE PROGRAM(S): Bachelor of Arts in Art: Studio Art Major EXPLAIN CHANGE(S) TO DEGREE PROGRAM: 1. The text has changed to reference chapter two for core curriculum. Degree requirements are now broken down into Prescribed Work, Major Requirements, and Electives. Additional Basic Education Requirements are now listed under Prescribed Work. 2. Rename the major-specific fine art or humanities requirement to general culture. 3. Reduce elective requirement from eighteen hours to fifteen hours. 4. New electives statement has been added. Indicate pages in the Undergraduate Catalog where changes will be made. Pages 244-245 GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR CHANGE(S): 1. Text has been reorganized to remain consistent with other colleges’ chapters in the Undergraduate Catalog. 2. The existing major-specific fine arts or humanities requirement (in addition to the requirements of the core curriculum) has been renamed “general culture,” because the new core curriculum has a requirement named “humanities.” 3. Three hours electives have been removed to accommodate new core curriculum requirements and to remain at 120 hours required for the degree. 4. Since double-dipping between core and major requirements is allowed, an electives statement has been added indicating that additional coursework may be needed to attain the 120 hours required for the degree.
