PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE
BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN ORGAN OR HARPSICHORD PERFORMANCE IN THE
COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS CHAPTER OF
THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2010-2012

NAME OF DEGREE PROGRAM(S): Bachelor of Music: Organ or Harpsichord Performance Major

EXPLAIN CHANGE(S) TO DEGREE PROGRAM:
1. Change text to reference chapter two for core curriculum. Degree requirements are now broken down into Prescribed Work, Major Requirements, and Electives.
2. Reduce major instrument 412 from four hours to three (major instrument 312). 312 is a new course that is pending course inventory approval.
3. Reduce major instrument 462 from four hours to three (major instrument 362). 362 is a new course that is pending course inventory approval.
4. Remove statement “Forty-one semester hours, consisting of” in the music literature and music theory section of Major Requirements.
5. Remove Music 221J (Music Analysis first semester) and 221K (Music Analysis second semester). Add Music 321J (Music Analysis). 321J is a new course that is pending course inventory approval.
6. Reduce requirement from six hours to three hours chosen from Music 334, 337, 342, 343J and 379K.

GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR CHANGE(S):

1. Text has been reorganized to remain consistent with other colleges’ chapters in the Undergraduate Catalog.
2. One hour has been removed from major instrument 412 to accommodate new core curriculum requirements and to offer courses in a standardized three-credit hour format.
3. One hour has been removed from major instrument 462 to accommodate new core curriculum requirements and to offer courses in a standardized three-credit hour format.
4. “Forty-one semester hours, consisting of” statement has been removed, because MUS 313M will double-dip with the core writing requirement and thus will not add hours counted toward the degree.
5. MUS 321J has replaced MUS 221J and 221K, because a one-semester three-hour course can better cover the required educational content. The Butler School of Music plans to offer many courses in a standardized three-credit hour format in the future.
6. This requirement has been reduced to accommodate new core curriculum requirements and to remain at 120 hours required for the degree.
7. Two semesters of MUS 259N have been added for consistency with degree requirements of other performance degrees offered by the Butler School of Music. Chamber music is part of the repertoire for career practices in these instruments.
8. Three hours of electives have been removed to accommodate the core curriculum requirements and to remain at 120 hours required for the degree.
9. Since double-dipping between core and major requirements is allowed, an electives statement has been added indicating that additional coursework may be needed to attain the 120 hours required for the degree.
