Resolution Affirming Ethical Research Standards (D 7786-7787)
Professor Paula Poindexter (journalism and Research Policy Committee chair) said her committee had determined that a set of written standards and guidelines were needed to strengthen the research core of the University because the members were concerned there were “few or no visible signs of ethical research standards that guide the research that we produce.” To accomplish this goal, the committee members researched their departments and associations and reviewed violations of an ethical nature and sought input from a number of other sources. She reported that the standards were drafted by the 2008-09 Research Policy Committee and reviewed by the 2009-10 committee as well as the vice president of research, the provost, the president, the dean of the Graduate School, and members of the Deans’ Council and the Faculty Council Executive Committee. After reviewing the proposed resolution, Professor Poindexter recommended approval of the resolution.
The motion was seconded and Chair Staiger called for a voice vote, which was unanimously passed.
