MINUTES OF THE REGULAR FACULTY COUNCIL MEETING OF
November 16. 2009

VIII. NEW BUSINESS.

A. Proposal to Disband the Commencement and Academic Ceremonies Committee (D 7436-7437).

Professor Cinthia Salinas (curriculum and instruction and committee chair) was not in attendance so Chair Staiger read the proposed legislation from Commencement and Academic Ceremonies Committee recommending that it be abolished. After discussing the original function and charge of the committee and its current functions and relevance, Chair Staiger said the members had voted unanimously to recommend abolishment of the committee. The change to a “theatrical framework” for commencement and the establishment of the Office of Relationship Management and University Events were reasons that the members believed their committee was not as relevant as it once had been. The members concluded that the committee should be disbanded unless a new charge was developed and approved for the committee. Chair Staiger clarified that a motion from a standing committee is automatically placed on the floor for a vote. She asked if there were any questions or comments, and there were none. Chair Staiger called for the vote, and the resolution was unanimously approved by a voice vote..
