VIII. LEGISLATION UNDER REVIEW BY THE FACULTY COUNCIL.
Changes to the Foreign Language Instruction in the Bachelor of Arts, Plan I and the Bachelor of Arts, Plan II Degrees in the College of Liberal Arts Chapter and the College of Natural Sciences Chapter of the Undergraduate Catalog, 2010-2012. Posted on the Faculty Council web site on October 8, 2009. The faculty of the college and the dean approved the changes on October 7, 2009. The College of Natural Sciences Course and Curriculum Committee approved the changes on October 5, 2009. The majority of the members of the Committee on Undergraduate Degree Program Review recommended approval of the changes on October 7, 2009, and forwarded the proposed changes to the Office of the General Faculty. The secretary has classified this proposal as emergency major legislation. The legislation was scheduled to be presented to the Faculty Council at its meeting on October 26, 2009, but Dean Randy Diehl withdrew the proposal on October 20, 2009, with the following statement:
Yesterday, the College of Liberal Arts held an open forum to discuss the proposed change in the language requirement. In three and a half hours of give and take, not one audience member spoke in favor of the proposal. In particular, none of the six departmental authors voiced support. In view of the overwhelming negative reaction to the proposal, I have decided to withdraw it from further consideration.
