7316 DOCUMENTS OF THE GENERAL FACULTY PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS IN THE BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS IN DESIGN IN THE GENERAL INFORMATION BULLETIN, 2010-2011 AND THE COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS CHAPTER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2010-2012 Dean Douglas Dempster of the College of Fine Arts has filed with the secretary of the Faculty Council the proposed changes to the admission requirements for the Bachelor of Fine Arts in design. The change will appear in the in the College of Fine Arts chapter in the Undergraduate Catalog, 2010-2012 and in the General Information bulletin, 2010-2011. The dean of the college approved the request on March 5, 2009. The secretary has classified this proposal as legislation of exclusive interest to one college or school. The Committee on Undergraduate Degree Program Review approved the proposal at its meeting on June 3, 2009, and forwarded the proposed changes to the Office of the General Faculty. The Faculty Council has the authority to approve this legislation on behalf of the General Faculty. The authority to grant final approval on this legislation resides with the executive vice chancellor of academic affairs. If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If an objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council. To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by five p.m. on September 8, 2009. The Department of Art and Art History has decided to begin admitting applicants to the B.F.A. Design program at the freshmen level, replacing the annual application to the sophomore design sequence. This change necessitates updating admission statements in the Undergraduate Catalog and the General Information Bulletin. Indicate pages in the Undergraduate Catalog where changes will be made. Undergraduate Catalog—Special Admission Requirements in the College of Fine Arts, page 229 General Information bulletin—Undergraduate Admission: Additional Requirements and Restrictions for Some Freshman and Transfer Applicants, p.29 GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR CHANGE(S): 1. This change is being made to prevent top applicants from self-selecting out of application to the program due to the prolonged two-year, two-pronged external and internal admission process currently in place. As the program already conducts annual performance reviews at the sophomore-to-junior and junior-to-senior levels, performance reviews will also be conducted at the freshmen-to-sophomore level in place of the current internal admission process.
