CHANGES IN THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE
BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE WITH A MAJOR IN
ARABIC LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE IN THE
COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS CHAPTER OF
THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2010-2012


Dean Randy Diehl of the College of Liberal Arts has filed with the secretary of the Faculty Council the proposed changes to the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Arabic Language and Literature in the College of Liberal Arts chapter of the Undergraduate Catalog, 2010-2012. The faculty of the college and the dean approved the changes on September 26, 2009. The secretary has classified this proposal as legislation of exclusive interest to one college or school.

The Committee on Undergraduate Degree Program Review recommended approval of the change on January 11, 2010, and forwarded the proposed changes to the Office of the General Faculty. The Faculty Council has the authority to approve this legislation on behalf of the General Faculty. The authority to grant final approval on this legislation resides with the executive vice chancellor for academic affairs.

If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If an objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council.

To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by January 20, 2010.

NAME OF DEGREE PROGRAM(S): Bachelor of Arts with a major in Arabic Language and Literature

EXPLAIN CHANGE(S) TO DEGREE PROGRAM:
  • Reduce the overall number of hours required for the major from twenty-six to twenty-four.
  • Remove Arabic 330K, Fourth-Year Arabic I, and 330L, Fourth-Year Arabic II, from the required language courses and add Arabic 120C, Third-Year Arabic I Conversation Practice, and 120D, Third-Year Arabic II Conversation Practice.
  • Reduce the six-hour literature requirement to three hours, include culture, and remove Arabic 360L, Topics in Arabic Language, Literature, and Culture as an option for this requirement.
  • Add a three-hour requirement for Arab history and society, Arabic 372, Topics in Arab History and Society.
  • Increase the hours of additional upper-division Arabic coursework to eight.
  • Restrict the number of hours of Arabic 322, Introduction to Arabic Literature; 360K, Topics in Arabic Literature in Translation; and 372, Topics in Arabic Culture, to six. Remove redundant limitation on conference courses.

GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR CHANGE(S):
Many of the above changes are motivated by two primary philosophies: First, students are more likely to achieve advanced proficiency in Arabic by using the language to discuss a broad array of topics and by developing a foundation of cultural knowledge. Second, the degree plan should offer students the flexibility to take courses counting toward the major throughout their four years of study.
The first philosophy calls for the elimination of the fourth-year Arabic sequence. After three years and thirty hours of Arabic language study, students are prepared for content-driven coursework taught exclusively in the target language. Removing the Arabic 330K and 330L requirement will allow students to take additional content courses taught in Arabic and thereby expand their language skills and cultural knowledge.
In adherence to the second philosophy, the course options for the six-hour literature requirement will be reduced to three hours and adjusted slightly to create a broader topics-in-translation component. Thus Arabic 360L, which is taught in Arabic, has been removed from the list of options, and the requirement is expanded to include topics in both literature and culture. The reduction in hours is regained through the addition of a requirement of one three-hour course on a topic in Arab history and society.
Because both the literature/culture and history/society requirements are fulfilled by courses in translation, these adjustments allow students to take more courses outside of the language sequence during the earlier years of study, when they do not yet meet the language prerequisite for courses taught entirely in Arabic. This will also enable them to get more out of their advanced coursework by establishing important historical and cultural knowledge so crucial to language proficiency. We have imposed a restriction on the topics-in-translation courses, however, allowing only six hours to count toward the major. This limitation ensures that a graduate of the Arabic program will have completed at least forty hours of coursework conducted in Arabic.
The remaining degree requirements will include eight hours of upper-division coursework in Arabic. This number was raised from six to make up for some of the hours of specified language courses removed from the degree. We opted for eight hours in lieu of the more predictable nine to encourage students to register for Arabic 130D, Arabic Across Disciplines, a repeatable course. Arabic 130D allows students to combine advanced language use with topics courses from departments across campus, strengthening our effort to promote advanced proficiency in Arabic through broad application of language skills.
Finally, the conversation sections for Arabic 420K and 420L, Arabic 120C and 120D, have been added to the specified language courses to establish greater transparency with regards to the registration requirements for students of Third-Year Arabic I and II and to allow students to receive credit towards the major for these courses. The six-hour limit on conference courses will become college-wide policy via a separate proposal.
