CHANGES TO THE BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE WITH A MAJOR IN PERSIAN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE IN THE
COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS CHAPTER OF
THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2010-2012

NAME OF DEGREE PROGRAM(S): Bachelor of Arts with a major in Persian Language and Literature

EXPLAIN CHANGE(S) TO DEGREE PROGRAM:
Add Persian 322K, Third-Year Persian I, and Persian 322L, Third-Year Persian II, to the degree plan as courses required for completion of the major.

Indicate pages in the undergraduate catalog where changes will be made. page 327

GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR CHANGE(S):
The third-year Persian sequence has been added to the degree program both for consistency across our language majors and to establish a standard of language proficiency for graduates of the Persian Language and Literature program. Requiring a third year of Persian language study commits students to seeking proficiency beyond the minimum required of all College of Liberal Arts students, a reasonable expectation for students majoring in the language.
Furthermore, as the prerequisite for Persian 329, nine hours of which are required for the major, will be Persian 322L, Third-Year Persian II, students are effectively required to complete Persian 322K and 322L to fulfill the degree requirements. Adding these courses to the degree plan, then, offers greater transparency with respect to what courses a student should expect to complete in pursuing a Persian Language and Literature major.
