CHANGES IN THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE

THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2010-2012

NAME OF DEGREE PROGRAM(S): Bachelor of Arts with a major in Sociology

EXPLAIN CHANGE(S) TO DEGREE PROGRAM:
SSC 303, 304, 305, 306, and Math 316 will now be allowed as alternatives to the Soc 317L Intro to Social Statistics course required of all Sociology majors. Students may now choose to take any of these other classes in lieu Soc 317L, as long as a grade of C or better is earned in the course. The three hour alternative course chosen would now count toward the nine minimum lower-division sociology courses required for the major, and also toward the total 27 hours in sociology required for the major.

Indicate pages in the undergraduate catalog where changes will be made. page 324

GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR CHANGE(S):
Presently, Soc 317L is cross-listed with SSC 305. Math 316 is seen as equivalent to SSC 305. However, there is no indication for students registered under Soc 317L that Math 316 is an equivalent. So we have a number of students who have done Math 316, but now are being told these course hours are redundant. This has been a recurrent problem and source of confusion for our students.
In addition, several of the introductory courses offered through the Division of Statistics and Scientific Computation have been approved by both Sociology faculty and the Director of the Division of SSC to be equivalent to Soc 317L; therefore, this option is now offered to students in the major.

SCOPE OF THE PROPOSED CHANGE(S):
Does this proposal impact other colleges/schools? If yes, then how? No.

Has the other college(s)/school(s) been informed of the proposed change? If so, please indicate their response. N/A.
