CHANGES TO THE DEAN'S SCHOLARS HONORS PROGRAM IN THE COLLEGE OF NATURAL SCIENCES CHAPTER OF THE
UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2010-2012

NAME OF DEGREE PROGRAM(S): Dean’s Scholars Honors Program

EXPLAIN CHANGE(S) TO DEGREE PROGRAM:
A statement has been added to clarify that students must be in good standing in the Dean’s Scholars Program to graduate under a Dean’s Scholars honors option. The requirements for remaining in good standing are also clarified.

Indicate pages in the undergraduate catalog where changes will be made. page 492

GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR CHANGE(S):
To graduate with an honors option in the college, students must have a GPA of 3.5 or better. This requirement can only be met if students make regular satisfactory progress in their coursework and meet expected GPA benchmarks. Although faculty advisors have regularly advised their students using these benchmarks, the minimum GPA expectations were not previously included in the catalog. They are now being added. Formalizing these GPA requirements will help ensure that students who are not making satisfactory progress will be able to select an alternative degree early enough in their degree of work that it will not substantially increase time to graduation.

SCOPE OF THE PROPOSED CHANGE(S):
Does this proposal impact other colleges/schools? If yes, then how? No.

Has the other college(s)/school(s) been informed of the proposed change? If so, please indicate their response. N/A.

Will this proposal change the number of required hours for degree completion? If yes, please explain. No.

Does this proposal involve changes to the core curriculum (42-hour core, signature courses, flags)? If yes, please explain. No.

COLLEGE/SCHOOL APPROVAL PROCESS:
Department Approval Date: August 19, 2009
