CREATION OF THE BACHELOR OF SOCIAL WORK HONORS PROGRAM IN THE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK CHAPTER OF
THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2010-2012


Dean Barbara White of the School of Social Work has filed with the secretary of the Faculty Council the proposed addition of the Bachelor of Social Work Honors Program. The changes will appear in the School of Social Work chapter in the Undergraduate Catalog, 2010-2012. The faculty of the college approved the changes on October 12, 2009, and the dean approved the changes on October 30, 2009. The secretary has classified this proposal as exclusive interest to one college or school.

The Committee on Undergraduate Degree Program Review approved the proposal at its meeting on January 11, 2010, and forwarded the proposed changes to the Office of the General Faculty. The Faculty Council has the authority to approve this legislation on behalf of the General Faculty. The authority to grant final approval on this legislation resides with the executive vice chancellor of academic affairs.

If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If an objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council.

To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by January 19, 2010.

Add a departmental honors program for the Bachelor of Social Work degree in the School of Social Work.

GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR CHANGE(S):

The mission statement for the School of Social Work states “through excellence in professional education, research, and service The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work provides national leadership to promote social and economic justice, alleviate social problems, and enhance well-being.” The BSW Undergraduate Honors Program at The University of Texas at Austin offers eligible social work majors a challenging and enriching opportunity to enhance their undergraduate education in order 1) to be prepared for graduate school and have the experience of conducting research 2) to be producers of research as well as consumers and see how research fits with policy and practice 3) to support research that relates to evidenced-based practice. The Honors Program will allow participants a head start on graduate-level study and noteworthy recognition of their scholarly achievements.
