MINUTES OF THE REGULAR FACULTY COUNCIL MEETING OF
December 6, 2010

VIII. NEW BUSINESS.

C. Proposed Changes to the Description of the Secretary of the General Faculty in the Handbook of Operating Procedures (D 8487).

Professor Staiger reported that the HOP called for the secretary of the General Faculty and Faculty Council to be elected at a General Faculty meeting to be held annually in October and the term of service would commence on the following January 1. In recent years, she said it had been difficult to schedule the General Faculty meeting in October for a variety of reasons. Furthermore, she explained that the current secretary had pointed out that an academic rather than a calendar year term of service might better fit the needs of the Faculty Council as well as the academic department in which the secretary is employed, especially for instructional scheduling. Professor Staiger said her committee was recommending that the secretary’s term of service be changed to the academic year with the election occurring in the previous spring semester. She said the president would appoint a special committee to nominate an individual for the position, and the General Faculty could make alternate nominations prior to the election. The election would occur annually at the same time other elections are held each spring. Professor Staiger said the current secretary, should she wish to continue her service, might be re-nominated. She added that the process would be an on-going one, as it currently is, but it would not be conducted at a General Faculty meeting, as it has been in the past. Professor Staiger asked if there were any questions, and there were none. Chair Neikirk opened the floor for discussion. Since there was none, he called for the vote, and the motion unanimously passed by voice vote.
