UPDATE TO THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PART I CORE CURRICULUM COURSE LISTS FOR THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2010-2012

Motion
On behalf of the Undergraduate Studies Advisory Committee (UGSAC), the dean of undergraduate studies requests approval to add the following courses and field of study area to the core curriculum course lists for the 2010-2012 Undergraduate Catalog.

Course Core Curriculum Area Rationale
MNS 307, 308 Science and Technology Part I MNS 307 is cross-listed with GEO 307, which is already on the core course list for 10-12. This cross-listing is likely to end in the near future, and if it does it would essentially delete a course from the core (since MNS 307 is in the core by default of being cross-listed with GEO 307). By adding MNS 308, we are creating a coherent Marine Science sequence for which students can earn credit in this core area as a separate field of study. Because we don’t want to disenfranchise students who may already be pairing GEO 307 with a different GEO course rather than with a MNS course, we will also allow students to continue to count GEO and MNS as a single field of study for the 10-12 catalog, but we will clearly separate GEO and MNS as fields of study in the 12-14 catalog.

Background
Proposals to add the aforementioned courses to the core curriculum core course lists originated in the offering departments and have been approved by UGSAC as meeting the relevant Student Competencies, which are based on and designed to demonstrate satisfaction of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Exemplary Educational Objectives. The approval dates are as follows:
Department approval date: 1/7/2011
UGSAC approval date: 3/23/2011
UGS Dean approval date: 3/23/2011

This motion to add these two courses, in conjunction with, D 6976-6981, D 7333-7335, D 7859-7861, and D 8017-8018 will define the core curriculum course lists for the 2010-2012 Undergraduate Catalog.
