MINUTES OF THE REGULAR FACULTY COUNCIL MEETING OF
January 23, 2012

III.
COMMUNICATION WITH THE PRESIDENT.

A. Comments by the President.

President William Powers welcomed everyone to the new calendar year and congratulated the Faculty Council as well as the University faculty, both collectively and individually on their accomplishments thus far during the academic year. He said it was the people—students, faculty and staff—that make UT Austin a great University. Although the campus is faced with ongoing challenges, President Powers noted that the tone or visibility of the debate had garnered less media attention of late. However, he assured the Council that the concerns were being actively debated in conferences and discussions and would continue to require the University to be vigilant. He said it was still of great importance to pay attention to budget issues, financial support, tuition concerns, cost-savings, quality improvements, and student success as UT Austin endeavors to contribute to improvements for Texas and the world. He concluded his remarks by saying that he was very proud to be a member of the UT Austin faculty community and thankful for the opportunity to serve in a leadership role.
