MINUTES OF THE REGULAR FACULTY COUNCIL MEETING OF
April 23, 2012
V. REPORT OF THE CHAIR ELECT.
Chair Elect Martha F. Hiley (music) said a report of recommendations (D 9660-9671) from the Coalition of Intercollegiate Athletics (COIA) was also included in the materials distributed to members when they entered the meeting. She indicated there were five recommendations at the beginning of the document and two appendices, “C” and “D,” that provided definitions and background for the recommendations. Chair Elect Hilley requested that Council members read the COIA materials before the May 14 Faculty Council meeting and come prepared to discuss the recommendations. At the May meeting, a panel comprised of Professors Alba Ortiz (special education and former member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Council for Men and the Student Life and Activities Committee), Tom Palaima (classics and former COIA representative), and a yet unnamed non-faculty representative from athletics would discuss the recommendations. Chair Elect Hilley explained that Professor Ted Gordon, UT’s current representative to COIA, would be unable to participate on the panel because the May meeting date conflicts with an important Gordon family event. She also indicated that materials were available on the Council’s website for members to review, including the recommendations, the report from the February national COIA meeting (including an executive summary), and Professor Gordon’s COIA report presented at the February 2012 Council meeting.
