MINUTES OF THE REGULAR FACULTY COUNCIL MEETING OF
November 28, 2011

VII. REPORTS OF THE GENERAL FACULTY, COLLEGES, SCHOOLS, AND COMMITTEES.

B. Presentation on the Sustainability Directory.

Jim Walker (director, Office of Sustainability)highlighted the history, composition, goals, and activities of the President’s Sustainability Steering Committee (see Appendix B). The group was established in 2007 and then re-chartered in 2009 under the leadership of Dean Frederick Steiner (architecture) and Vice President Patricia Clubb (University operations). To find information about the committee’s work, he demonstrated clicking on “About UT” on the University’s webpage and then clicking on “Sustainability” in the left sidebar on the second page. The committee has developed a natural resource management plan that feeds into the campus master plan, produced a greenhouse-gas inventory that offers many student opportunities, introduced a green labs initiative for the 1,200 labs on campus, and worked with a number of units across campus. One major effort underway is to document and compile a directory of all activities occurring across campus that are related to sustainability. This project, which has received support from the provost’s office and Susan Rieff (director, Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center), provides a way to search for courses, degree plans, research initiatives, funding sources and amounts, centers/institutes, faculty, and staff involved with the mission of sustainability. Mr. Walker cited the Princeton Review’s College Hopes & Worries Survey, which reported that sixty-five percent of the respondents indicated that knowing what a university’s environmental initiatives were and its sincerity regarding them was important in their decision-making. He said this finding emphasized the importance of sustainability to a university and indicated that he welcomed the opportunity to meet with departments and faculty members to learn about their current activities and potential interests related to sustainability.
