changes in admission requirements to THE Degree Program in urban studies in the College of Liberal Arts Chapter in the Undergraduate Catalog, 2012-2014

NAME OF DEGREE PROGRAM(S):
  URBAN STUDIES

EXPLAIN CHANGE(S) TO DEGREE PROGRAM:
  To be admitted to the Urban Studies degree program, students must now apply. They will be admitted only after having completed Statistics (Mathematics 316 or Statistics and Scientific Computation 305) and Calculus (Mathematics 408C or 408K) with a grade of B- or better in each. The 2010-2012 catalog required Urban Studies majors to complete these classes with a grade of C- or better, but did not require these courses to be completed prior to admission into the degree program.

Indicate pages in the Undergraduate Catalog where changes will be made.

  Pages 343

GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR CHANGE(S):
  Some students in the major have difficulty meeting the math requirements. These changes are intended to reduce the number of students in the program who lose time trying to meet the math requirements. It will also improve the skill level of students in the program and ensure that they are capable of carrying out the independent research and analysis that are required in the program. In addition, it should reduce the overall number of majors, alleviating a problem with long waiting lists, which makes it difficult for students to obtain the required courses, and which ultimately leads them to take longer than expected to complete the degree.
