PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE DEGREE PROGRAM IN NURSING IN THE SCHOOL OF NURSING CHAPTER IN THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2012-2014

 

Dean Alexa Stuifbergen of the School of Nursing has filed with the secretary of the Faculty Council the following changes to the School of Nursing Chapter in the Undergraduate Catalog, 2012-2014. The faculty of the college and the dean approved the changes on January 11 and January 13, 2012, respectively. The secretary has classified this proposal as legislation of general interest to more than one college or school.

The Committee on Undergraduate Degree Program Review recommended approval of the change on January 18, 2012, and forwarded the proposed changes to the Office of the General Faculty. The Faculty Council has the authority to approve this legislation on behalf of the General Faculty. The authority to grant final approval on this legislation resides with UT System.

If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If an objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council.

To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by January 30, 2012.

EXPLAIN CHANGE TO DEGREE PROGRAM:
 
  1. This change adds being on track towards a timely graduation as an additional criterion for UT students in other colleges to transfer into prenursing (page 621).
  2. This change adds being on track towards a timely graduation to part of the criteria for admission decisions into the upper-division nursing program (page 622).

GIVE A DETAILED RATIONALE FOR CHANGE(S):

 

1. This change will improve time to degree by providing entering freshman with an incentive to stay on track for a timely graduation, even if they are in another college prior to transferring into prenursing. Additionally, students who take full loads and stay on track will be better prepared to handle the rigors of the upper-division nursing course load than students taking lighter course loads each semester.

2. This change will improve time to degree by providing entering freshman with an incentive to stay on track for a timely graduation since it will be included as part of the admission criteria to upper-division nursing. Additionally, students who take full loads and stay on track will be better prepared to handle the rigors of the upper-division nursing course load than students taking lighter course loads each semester.
