UPDATE TO THE CORE CURRICULUM COURSE LISTS FOR THE UNDERGRADUATE CATALOG, 2012-2014

Motion

On behalf of the Undergraduate Studies Advisory Committee (UGSAC), the dean of undergraduate studies requests approval to add the following courses to the core curriculum course lists for the 2012-2014 Undergraduate Catalog.

Course

Core Curriculum Area

Rationale

GEO 303C

Science and Technology Part I

Newly-created course that introduces students to the fundamental concepts of astronomy, geology, and biology. Students will learn about the history of planetary exploration and the methods scientists use to explore fundamental questions regarding our place in the universe. This course is recommended to be paired with GEO 401, 302C, 302D, 302E, 302K, 302M, 303, 305E, 301, or 420H.

F A 308

Visual and Performing Arts

This is a new course that will be added to the course inventory in fall 2013. Because the UT course inventory system is currently closed, it is being submitted for consideration as soon as possible, and we would like it officially on the core list so that students can take advantage of this new course as soon as it is available. It is designed to stimulate students’ thinking and expand students’ knowledge and experience in arts integration.

Background

Proposals to add the GEO 303C and FA 308 to the core curriculum core course lists originated in the offering departments and have been approved by UGSAC as meeting the relevant Student Competencies, which are based on and designed to demonstrate satisfaction of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Exemplary Educational Objectives.
