ADJOURNMENT.

Chair Hillary Hart reminded Council members of the meeting the following day with President Powers and Provost Fenves about technology-enhanced education and the direction it is taking on this campus. She emphasized that the faculty are the keepers of the education and the curriculum, so it is important to have a dialogue with the administration and encouraged members to attend.

President Powers added that there had been “a lot of discussion and a great deal of activity on campus about the use of technology and education,” some of it political. He cited a hypothetical example of a student earning credit for an online MOOCs course from another university because Texas Law requires that UT Austin give credit. He said that this was an example of what faculty ought to be thinking about in terms of technology-enhanced education. In addition, he said there are still technical, business, and financial issues to work out. He emphasized that the University is now at a place where these kinds of courses are beginning to impact our curriculum. President Powers said that over the next six months to a year, there would be many conversations on campus about what we ought to be doing with our degree programs. He noted that, like curriculum reform, UT Austin is at the stage where it needs faculty involvement to ensure that the right decisions are made moving forward. He strongly encouraged and charged the faculty “to start taking very seriously where we are going with some of these issues.”

Chair Elect Beckner reminded Council members that an ad hoc committee chaired by Professor Michael White (Graduate Assembly chair, classics) had been working on drafting the function and composition of a proposed new Technology-Enhanced Education Oversight Committee and that a proposal would probably be presented to the Faculty Council before the end of the term.

In closing the meeting, Hillary Hart again reminded members of the March 3 meeting in College Station. The meeting adjourned at 3:32 PM.
