MINUTES OF THE REGULAR FACULTY COUNCIL MEETING OF
OCTOBER 21, 2013

IV.
REPORT OF THE CHAIR.

A. Introduction of Executive Vice President and Provost Gregory L. Fenves.
Dr. Hart introduced Dr. Gregory Fenves who had been appointed executive vice president and provost effective October 1, 2013. Prior to this appointment and for the past five years, Provost Fenves had served as dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering, having left his position as chair of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley.

Provost Fenves was welcomed with applause. He addressed the Faculty Council noting the importance of Faculty Governance. As an example, he cited UT System’s UTS 180 policy, which had met with much concern but had not seen significant changes until the Faculty Council got engaged last spring. The Council, representing the faculty with a significant and strong voice, brought about some important revisions pertaining to the UTS 180 policy that resulted in an acceptable resolution that now meets UT System’s goal while not infringing upon faculty rights and responsibilities. The provost thanked the Council for its work and said that he was looking forward to attending future meetings and to working with the Council toward a common goal.

Before resuming with the regular agenda, Chair Hart announced that Dr. Edmund (Ted) Gordon (Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics (COIA) representative and department chair, African and African diaspora studies) would report on increasing faculty engagement in a deregulated athletics context. See agenda item V.A. Dr. Hart continued her report after Professor Gordon’s conclusion.
