Additional CORE CURRICULUM Requirements

Skills and Experiences Flags

In the process of fulfilling core, major, and elective requirements, all undergraduate students are expected to complete courses with content in the following six areas:

  • Writing (3 courses beyond RHE 306 or its equivalent)
  • Quantitative Reasoning (1 course)
  • Global Cultures (1 course)
  • Cultural Diversity in the United States (1 course)
  • Ethics and Leadership (1 course)
  • Independent Inquiry (1 course)

The Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies will monitor flagged courses for quality and compliance with the guidelines promulgated by the General Faculty. Courses with sufficient content in these areas will be identified in the Course Schedule by the addition of a “flag” of the appropriate type.

As each degree program may implement these requirements in different ways, students should consult their advisors and the major requirements listed in chapters 3-15 of this Catalog. Not all degree programs have fully implemented these requirements for students entering in 2008-2010.

Foreign Language

In addition to the core curriculum requirements above, undergraduate students are expected to enter the University having completed two years of study in a single foreign language in high school. Students without two years of high school foreign language coursework must earn credit for the second college-level course in a foreign language; this credit does not count toward the student’s degree.
