REQUEST TO ADD A UTEACH NATURAL SCIENCES SECONDARY TEACHING OPTION CERTIFICATE AND/OR REQUEST FOR RECOGNITION ON THE UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPTS

Dean Linda Hicke of the College of Natural Sciences has filed with the secretary of the Faculty Council the following changes to the College of Natural Sciences Chapter of the Undergraduate Catalog 2014-2016. The secretary has classified this proposal as general legislation.

The Committee on Undergraduate Degree Program Review recommended approval of the change on April 29, 2013, and forwarded the proposed changes to the Office of the General Faculty. The Faculty Council has the authority to approve this legislation on behalf of the General Faculty. Final approval resides with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

If no objection is filed with the Office of the General Faculty by the date specified below, the legislation will be held to have been approved by the Faculty Council. If an objection is filed within the prescribed period, the legislation will be presented to the Faculty Council at its next meeting. The objection, with reasons, must be signed by a member of the Faculty Council. 

To be counted, a protest must be received in the Office of the General Faculty by noon on May 9, 2013.

6. Statement of Objective

The UTeach Natural Sciences program offers a secondary teaching option certificate to majors who intend to teach at the Middle or High School level. There is a consistent overwhelming demand for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teachers in the state of Texas. The UTeach Program is known for producing highly qualified STEM teachers. Each semester, various school districts from around the state come to the university specifically to recruit our graduates. By creating this certificate, students can receive direct transcript recognition for their work.

Note that earning the UTeach certificate is not, in itself, all that is needed for student recommendation of teacher certification to the state. Students must also complete their degree, having taken certain content specific courses based on the discipline of study and must take required state certification examinations. UTeach advisors can provide specific information about these requirements.

11. Other Certificate Requirements:

To graduate and be recommended for senior grades certification, the student must have a University grade point average of at least 2.50. Students must adhere to current certification requirements, even if they differ from those listed in a University catalog. There are also certain discipline specific content courses for various subject certifications. Students must pass a final teaching portfolio review to be recommended for certification. Consultation with a UTeach advisor is necessary to ensure that these requirements will be met.
