Applicants to the PhD program must have a master's degree or anticipate the award of a master's degree prior to the beginning of the fall semester. If you do not yet have a master's degree awarded or in progress, you cannot apply to the doctoral program.
Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
The University of Texas at Austin requires that all graduate applicants submit a current GRE score. Art History does not require a minimum GRE score to apply.
For those admitted to the MA program in fall 2012, the average total score (combined verbal and quantitative scores) on the Revised GRE is 317; the average Writing score is 4.75. Successful applicants to the PhD program average somewhat higher. The GRE score is a supporting part of the application; applicants are not denied or offered admission solely on the basis of their GRE score.
It is recommended that you take the GRE no later than December 15 to allow sufficient time for the scores to be reported to the University of Texas at Austin.
The Art History Admissions Committee awards all funding on the basis of academic merit; there is no separate application for fellowships or assistantships. Teaching Assistantships are awarded only to doctoral-level students.
