Letter from the Chair Winter 2014

 Pam McIlhennyPam McIlhenny, Chair

Thank you to all who attended the winter Advisory Council meeting on January 31 on campus.   We appreciate your support!  If you weren’t able to attend, we missed you, and hope you’ll be able to attend one of the upcoming regional meetings this spring.

The winter meeting focused on successes of the College of Fine Arts and the ways in which our dean is navigating the sea change that the college is facing.  A big thank you to our "Managing Change" panelists:  Richard Hartgrove and Bryan Lewis  (Austin), Carla Thompson (Fort Worth) and Dancie Ware (Houston).  What a treat to hear expertise from our own members!  Their good advice for leading an organization through major transitions was broad-based, practical, and strategic.   The panel was a great hit and sparked much conversation afterwards.

The college presented the "Fedora Awards" to council members Robin Hancock (Austin) for Advocacy, and Suzanne Cavender (San Antonio) for Student Recruitment.  Mary Bartholow (Dallas), who was unable to attend, was announced as the honoree for Fundraising.

Lisa Boyd spoke briefly on the newest nominees to the council before Kathy Panoff, Director of Texas Performing Arts, shared how she and her staff are increasing student engagement in the performing arts on campus.  The Texas Musical Theatre Ambassadors (a group of first and second year students) performed, and Butler School of Music Interim Director Glenn Richter gave an update on the Menuhin International Violin Competition followed by a student piano performance.  Here you’ll find the minutes from the council meeting. Photos from the event can be viewed here.

Spring meetings will be held around the state in March and April, so please watch for more information soon.  And please mark your calendars for our fall meeting on Friday, September 5, 2014 in Austin.  More information regarding the fall meeting is included in this newsletter.

I hope you’ll each take a few minutes to complete a survey of your experiences with the Advisory Council.    Your feedback will help us to make your participation on the council even better.  As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions.   I look forward to seeing you again soon!

Warmest Regards,

Pam McIlhenny
