Butler School of Music alumnus, Billy Ray Hunter, Jr., B.M. 1997, was named one of four recipients of the Outstanding Young Texas Ex award for 2009. Inaugurated in 1980, the award recognizes young alumni who are distinguished in their fields and have demonstrated a continuing interest in The University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Exes.
In February, the college opened its newest exhibition space, The FAB Gallery, located in the new Student Center in the Doty Fine Arts Building (hence, FAB). The college’s official undergraduate student organization, The Fine Arts Council, manages the gallery. Join current students and the Austin community at the next opening reception on Friday, March 27.
The University Co-op Presents the Cohen New Works Festival debuts 31 new works in a week-long spectacle of performance, installation and participation, March 30 – April 4.
Serving as a living legacy to honor the memory of David Mark Cohen, playwright, critic, arts activist and former head of the Playwriting Program at UT, The University Co-op Presents the Cohen New Works Festival is a biennial festival organized by the UT Department of Theatre and Dance celebrating original works created by students, faculty, and guest artists invited from across the nation.
The 18th annual Viewpoint Lecture series will be presented by the Department of Art and Art History this spring. Viewpoint 2009 is a series of concentrated visits by leading curators, critics and scholars who are involved in the diverse and multifaceted contemporary art world. The lectures occur over the course of the entire spring 2009 semester, allowing students to share critical dialogue and network with industry experts.
The Butler School of Music’s internationally recognized UT Wind Ensemble traveled to Dallas for an outreach concert at the Meyerson Symphony Center on March 10, 2009. The concert was part of the School’s comprehensive outreach program, which sends our premiere ensembles throughout the state with an eye towards recruiting Texas’s best and brightest students.
New Director of Performing Arts Center Named
After a seven month-long international search, Kathleen Panoff, currently executive director of the Modlin Center for the Arts at the University of Richmond, will be the next director and associate dean of The University of Texas at Austin Performing Arts Center, effective August 1, 2009.
