Alum Don Bacigalupi Named One of AY Magazine's Powerful Men of 2012

Art and Art History alumnus Don Bacigalupi (Ph.D., Art History, 1993), was named one of AY Magazine's Powerful Men of 2012 in the Art category. Bacigalupi is currently the executive director of the Crystal Bridges Museum of Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
He previously worked at the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, Ohio, the San Diego Museum of Art in San Diego, California, and the San Antonio Museum of Art in San Antonio, Texas.

COFA Alumni Featured in Austin Gallery Show

This Friday, Gallery Black Lagoon will host the opening reception for Blurred Lines, their newest exhibition featuring multiple alumni from the College of Fine Arts. Cliona Gunter (BFA, 1989), David Lujan (BFA, 2008), and Stephen Schwake (Studio Art, 1999) are all participating in the exhibition featuring drawings and mixed media works.
Opening reception is Friday, July 13 from 7pm to 10pm. Exhibition runs through July 28 and is available for viewing Saturdays from 1pm to 5pm or by appointment. You can RSVP to the reception here.

Alumna Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Alumna Elizabeth Hill Boone (MA, Art History, 1974; Ph.D., Art History, 1977) was recently elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and to the Academia Mexicana de la Historia, an affiliate of the Real Academia in Madrid, Spain.
Dr. Boone is currently the Martha and Donald Robertson Chair in Latin American Art at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Recent Alumna Tamara Johnson Curates and Shows in New York City

Alumna Tamara Johnson (BFA, Studio Art, 2007), a graduate of the MFA program at the Rhode Island School of Design, recently curated a group exhibition as part of the NARS Foundation 2012 Emerging Curator Program. "Show Me Your Glands" will be available for viewing June 30 through July 29 in Brooklyn, NY at the NARS Foundation Gallery. Tamara Johnson will host a curator's talk in the gallery on Saturday, July 14 at 4 pm.
Additionally, Johnson is also curating and participating in a group alumni exhibition of RISD's MFA Sculpture department in NYC at the Rooster Gallery, opening July 12 and running until July 29. The opening reception will be Thursday, July 12 from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Alumna Maxine Price Showcases Work in North and Central Texas

Art and Art History Alumna Maxine Price (BFA, 1959) will be showing her work at the Bob Fowler Retrospective Benefit Sale and Silent Auction in Wimberley, Texas. Works will be available for viewing on Friday, July 6th from 5pm to 8pm and Saturday, July 7th from 10am to 3:30pm at the First Baptist Church. Maxine will be in attendance Friday from 5:30pm to 6:30pm signing posters featuring her painting. All proceeds from this sale and silent auction will go to the family of Bob Fowler, a late renowned artist who was killed in a tragic accident.
Additionally, her work is now being represented in Dallas, Texas at the prestigious Blue Print Store. Started by five leading Dallas interior designers, the Blue Print Store features high-end furniture and original abstract art.

Studio Art Alum Starts Las Manos Negras, Receives Funding

Art and Art History alum Dane Larsen (BFA, Studio Art, 2008) has joined with conceptual artist Scott Gleeson to create a new controversial Dallas-based public art project, Las Manos Negras (The Black Hands). Las Manos Negras is a grassroots initiative designed to facilitate communication between day laborers, contractors, and labor advocates and to empower workers to assert their legal and moral rights to social justice. To help further this project, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts has awarded Larsen and Gleeson a coveted 2012 Idea Fund Grant.
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts awards ten $4,000 grants annually to support experimental public artworks. Las Manos Negras will use the grant funds to develop an audio archive of worker's narratives that have been recorded at varying Dallas construction site since August 2011. Workers stories will be available to the public through a bilingual proect website, www.lasmanosnegros.org.

Maxine Price's Contemporary Paintings on Display
In the coming weeks, Maxine Price, BFA '59, will be showing her contemporary original paintings in two Texas galleries. First, TASTE Wine + Art Kirchman Gallery in Johnson City is honoring Ms. Price from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 30 and again beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 8. Alumna Dawn Davis Loring Featured in Upcoming Dance Festival

Alumna Dawn Davis Loring (BA, Dance, 1992) and Mosaic Dance Body present Danceopoly at the Big Range Austin Dance Festival. Danceopoly is a game involving both audience and dancers and "takes a snarky look at being a struggling artist through the lens of a cheesy reality game show."
Collaborators include Dawn Davis Loring, Jennifer Micallef, Tracy Sadler Machalek, Ivry Newsome, Cinnamon Barton and Dawnerin Wilkinson.
Danceopoly will be shown at the Salvage Vanguard Theatre on June 30th at 8pm and on July 1st at 2pm.

Alumna Katy O'Connor Featured in Exhibition at Generous Art

Alumna Katy O'Connor (MFA, Painting, 1999) is having a studio sale at Generous Art Gallery to benefit Planned Parenthood of the Texas Capital Region. On view from May 25 to September 10, 2012, the sale will be hosted at Texas French Bread in Austin, TX. All artworks are original oil paintings on canvas and panel. Forty percent of all sales will go toward the Austin Stands with Planned Parenthood campaign.

Art History Alumna Opens Gallery in New Space

On Friday, June 29th, alumna Thao Votang (BA, Art History, 2008) and her partner, Brian Willey, will reopen their gallery, Tiny Park, into a dedicated space at 1101 Navasota Street in Austin, Texas.
The opening will coincide with the opening of "Greatest Hits", a group exhibition featuring all of the artists previously featured in their home-based gallery. Featured artists include Michael Sieben, Sam Prekop, Deborah Stratman, Miguel Aragon, PJ Raval, Nick Brown, Leah Haney, David Culpepper, Stephanie Serpick and Rob Lomblad.
A reception will be held June 29th from 7pm to 11pm and the exhibition runs through July 28th. Viewing of the exhibition is available from 12pm to 5pm on Saturdays and by appointment.

The University of Oklahoma Press announced the publication of Megan E. O'Neil's (MA Art History,1999) book Engaging Ancient Maya Sculpture at Piedras Negras, Guatemala. In this book, O'Neil discusses how ancient Maya people interacted with sculpture in the culture.

Art History Alumna To Move Living Room Gallery To Dedicated Space

In May, after the close of its current show, alumna Thao Votang (BA, Art History, 2008) and her partner, Brian Willey, will move their living room art gallery, Tiny Park, into a dedicated space at 1101 Navasota Street in Austin. Votang and Willey plan to open the first show in late June or early July.

The Texas Guitar Quartet Releases Debut Album, "Red"
Texas Guitar Quartet
The Texas Guitar Quartet, comprised of BSoM graduates Isaac Bustos (DMA, Music, 2010), Jonathan Dotson (DMA, Music, 2010), Alejandro Montiel, (DMA, Music, 2009) and Joseph Williams II, released their debut album titled "Red" in March of 2012. Produced in Houston, the recording contains new pieces and arrangements for guitar quartet, including the world-premiere recording of Antoine de Lhoyer's "Air Varié et dialogué" and Joseph Williams' "Red" quartet. Alumna Amy Williams Opens Solo Exhibition in Brooklyn
440 Gallery - Brooklyn, NY
The 440 Gallery in Brooklyn, New York presents Petits Fours, a solo exhibition by Amy Williams (BFA, 1999). A site-specific installation, Petits Fours consists of gilt-framed photographs, gilt-framed mirrors, and a dramatic color of wall paint, all in examination of the extravagance of King Louis XIV's Palace of Versailles.
Petits Fours opens Thursday, May 24th and will run through Sunday, June 24, 2012. A reception for Williams will be held May 24th from 6 to 8 pm. The 440 Gallery is located at 440 Sixth Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.

Art History alum Don Bacigalupi (MA, 1985 and Ph.D., 1993) is featured in the New York Times' "T" Magazine. The article discusses his new home, life, and career as Director of the Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas. Bacigalupi, his partner Dan Feder, and their son Guston moved to Bentonville from Toledo, Ohio, where Bacigalupi was director of the Toledo Museum of Art.

COFA Alum and Student Featured in Upcoming Tiny Park Gallery Show
Tiny Park Gallery, located in Austin, Texas, will premiere their 2012 Drawing Annual on May 4th and will feature one UT alum and a current student, Miguel Aragon (MFA student) and Leah Haney (BFA, 2010). The exhibition will focus on drawings and the concept of drawing. The opening will be on Friday, May 4, 2012 from 7 pm to 11 pm and will continue through May 20, with viewings available on Saturdays from 12 pm to 5 pm and by appointment. Alumna Suzanne Bocanegra Presents Piece at the Fusebox Festival

From April 27th to April 29th, Suzanne Bocanegra (BFA, 1979) will do performances of her piece "When a Priest Marries a Witch: An Artist Talk by Suzanne Bocanegra starring Paul Lazar". First premiered at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in 2010, Bocanegra will perform her work as part of the Fusebox Festival, an annual contemporary art and performance festival that takes place each April in Austin, TX.
Performances will take place at the Salvage Vanguard Theatre on:
April 27th at 9 pm, April 28th at 1 pm, and April 29th at 7 pm.
