*Eastern Antiquities and Renaissance Europe*
No term in this title was stable during the period around 1500. Eastern in this period could mean Spain, or the New World, as well as the eastern Mediterranean and beyond. Antiquities could mean Fatimid work, or Mamluk, or Nasrid, or Ming—even contemporary Italian works counted as antiquities. And Europe was a conception in formation. The argument of this talk is that the formation of the conception of Europe required the settling down of the other two terms into their more restricted modern definitions.
Nagel is Professor of Fine Arts in the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.
