Event Description:

Guest Lecturer: Prof. Daniel Neuman, UCLA

Biography | Genealogy | History: Hindustani Music History Making

This talk will concern the general challenges of writing Hindustani music history and the approach I am attempting through the examination of five generations of musicians in the family of my own teacher, Ustad Sabri Khan. It will emphasize also the value of genealogy and life history in such an attempt as well as its limitations. More generally, it is also about the talk about the history of the last 150 years; and by talk I mean it in two senses; the talk of artists and the talk of scholars.
