Texas Performing Arts welcomes back the mad scientist of Brazilian percussion Cyro Baptista, this time with his Banquet of the Spirits Quartet. This adventurous ensemble delivers hypnotic percussion and multi-layered string wizardry, mixing far-flung sounds of the Jewish diaspora with Brazilian and Middle Eastern melodies to create “a diversity of sounds and colors that can’t be found anywhere else.” (All About Jazz)
Since arriving in the United States in 1980 from his native Brazil, Baptista has emerged as one of the foremost percussionists in the world. His endless sonic curiosity and intense rhythmic drive have spurred collaborations with everyone from Herbie Hancock and John Zorn to Yo-Yo Ma and Paul Simon.
