*Beauty or Beast?: Judging Manet’s Olympia in the Age of Comparative Anatomy*
Manet’s Olympia, exhibited in the Salon of 1865, has been celebrated for almost 150 years for its startling originality and the public outcry that it inspired. This lecture will reconsider how critics’ ways of looking at the body were impacted by contemporary debates over the limits between the human and the animal and the methods of comparative anatomy.
Dr. Anne McCauley received her PhD from Yale University and is the David Hunter McAlpin Professor of the History of Photography and Modern Art at Princeton University.
