Event Title:Landmarks Video Presents "The Amateurist" by Miranda July (More Information)
Event Description:

On view for the month of January 2014

In many of Miranda July’s films and videos, she combines her interest in themes of desire, anxiety, loneliness, and perversion with her fascination with codes and systems. She presents various patterns of behavior, which in her view are arbitrary systems—an idea that is explicitly expressed in The Amateurist (1998), in which July plays the roles of both a Professional (the “Amateurist”) and an Amateur. The film offers a feminist perspective on surveillance and explores the politics and psychology of watching and being watched. The video wavers between horror and satire in its portrayal of a woman on the brink of madness, driven there by another woman who is as oblivious to the Amateur’s despair as she is obsessed by her actions.

Videos are screened on a media station in the ART building located on the corner of East 23rd Street and San Jacinto Boulevard. Adjacent to art history classrooms and the Visual Arts Center galleries, the media station is in an open atrium that provides stadium seating for viewing from 8 am to 9 pm daily. Headsets to optimize sound may be checked out from the Visual Arts Center reception desk during operating hours.
