How to Apply

Application Deadlines: 

Early Decision Deadline: December 1, 2013
*early deadline for applicants not attending U/RTA

Final Decision Deadline: March 1, 2014
*for applicants attending U/RTA

Instructions below serve all Design and/or Technology Areas: Costume Design, Lighting Design, Scenery Design, Costume Technology and Integrated Media. 

Applicants may only apply in one area per academic year.

Completed application files will be reviewed before those submitted with missing materials.

Application Procedures

Please read all instructions carefully.

All application materials must be sent electronically. No hard copies or mailing will be accepted except under certain conditions. Documents, supplemental materials and portfolios (as indicated by each degree plan) must be uploaded using PDF format unless otherwise indicated.

1) To apply, go to ApplyTexas.org
Here you will set up an account and fill out the form.
Note: Online requests for recommendations will be activated only after you have completed and paid for your application.

2) You will be able to choose your Area of Interest on a pull down menu, and this will ensure that you are applying to the right program. For example “M.F.A. in Directing,” “M.F.A. in Dance,” “M.F.A. in Lighting Design,” etc.

3) After completing and paying for your application you will be sent an email (roughly within 48 hours). This email will direct you to a site where you can check your Application Status (using your new EID) and begin to upload your other degree requirements: My Status: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/apps/adm/mystatus
Note: Be mindful of application deadlines for the degree you are applying for.

GRE

If the GRE is required by your degree plan, be sure to enter the appropriate codes on your application: Department Code, Theatre and Dance: 2406, Institution Code, UT Austin: 6882. For more on the GRE visit http://www.ets.org/gre

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
No GRE required for the MFA in Design and/or Technology

Three letters of recommendation:
These letters should be written by those who can speak most authoritatively about your background, training, experience and potential for a career in your chosen area of specialization in theatre. Letters should be submitted with the Request for Reference form available online at the time of application. Each reference will receive instructions how to submit his/her letter on-line to GIAC's secured web site. Only one letter is required from each reference.

A résumé of all your practical theatre work

Personal statement of goals:
The statement of purpose should outline educational and professional goals, philosophy, and/or personal theatre aesthetic.

Design or Technical résumé

Design or Technical portfolio in the form of a power point or quick-time image file on DVD. DVD portfolio should include examples of drawing, painting, drafting, or any other hand skills applicable to your discipline, photos of realized productions, or any evidence of realized artwork. This DVD will not be returned. Applicants should bring original portfolio to their on campus interview should one be scheduled.

Portfolio requirements:
As of 2009 the portfolio requirement has changed. All portfolios must be submitted in the form of a website link or DVD before an interview can be scheduled. Any uploaded images as portfolio materials (including the website link) must be in PDF format.


How to send Portfolio Materials:
All PDF materials should be uploaded using the “Supplemental” link on the My Status page.

Any materials that cannot be upload in PDF format should be mailed directly to Susan Mickey, Design/Tech Program Head:

Interviews

Review of the resume and the DVD portfolio by the faculty will determine the necessity of an on campus interview.
