As a student at the University of Texas at Austin, I was overwhelmed by the number of buildings, people, student organizations, and seats in the football stadium. Fortunately for me, I had an academic advisor that worked with me to ensure I found my way. After many conversations my sophomore year, she led me to a brand new study abroad program at Dartington College of Arts. It was in this Arts and Cultural Management program that I learned about the power of fundraising and the opportunities that nonprofit organizations create. Along with seven other exchange students, I raised $25,000 to fund a transformative and collaborative weekend arts festival and youth arts workshop.
After graduation, I ambitiously moved to Washington, D.C. to gain more fundraising experience. After a three month internship at The Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, I landed at the Washington Performing Arts Society where I developed a professional and strategic fundraising base. My role included mostly administrative tasks for the Major Gift and Planned Giving campaigns, but after a year, the President Emeritus invited me to join him for solicitation meetings.
After getting married and moving back to Austin, I expanded my fundraising base at ZACH Theatre through managing the Membership (gifts under $1,000) and Special Events Campaigns. I led both volunteer and professional tele-fund campaigns, collaborated with the marketing staff on direct mail and email solicitations, and picked up the phone at the end of the fiscal year to bring in lapsed gifts. I served as a staff liaison between a volunteer committee, the staff and the production team to organize the gala and the young professional’s event.
In 2010, I moved on to serve as the Director of Development for Center Stage Texas, a small nonprofit youth arts center in east-Austin. I had the opportunity to work with the Board, be creative with fundraising ideas and events, and participate in every function of the organization. I taught a ballet class, managed all of the organization's finances and budget projections, organized and attended every event, and began meeting with philanthropists, parents and leaders of the community to get the word out about an incredible mission to serve youth in Austin.
I am excited to come full circle and have taken on a new role at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business as the Development Associate. My experience as a student at UT prepared me to be successful in my career and when I moved to Washington, I was welcomed by one of the largest Texas Exes groups outside of Austin. I am so thrilled to be a part of a fundraising team that creates opportunities like my own for UT students and to give back to the university that so positively contributed to my personal and professional life.
