Michelle Habeck’s design work is seen nationally at The Guthrie Theater, Goodman Theatre, CenterStage Baltimore, Alliance Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre and many others. She collaborates with many fine artists including, Julie Taymor, Twyla Tharp, August Wilson, James Still, Marion McClinton, Amy Morton, Tina Landau, Naomi Wallace, Nambi E. Kelly, Marcus Gardley, Audrey Cefaly, Lou Bellamy and Kwame-Kwei Armah to develop new work and reexamine works that prove momentous to our immediate present. Habeck worked as associate on Broadway to Tony award-winning designer, Donald Holder on collaborations including Julie Taymor’s Opera Grendel at Lincoln Center, King Hedley II, Gem of the Ocean, Movin’Out, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Boy From Oz, Julie Taymor’s Playing with Fire and lighting for The UK Millennial commission, The Earth Center Gallery in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. Habeck was honored with the National Endowment for the Arts, Theatre Communications Group Career Development Grant for 2003-05 and holds the 2009 UT Austin Cooperative Society Creative Research Award. Habeck is a Provost Teaching Fellow on faculty in the department of theatre and dance and for the department of arts and entertainment technology.

    What is your favorite thing about Austin? 

    Not too big, not too small - it's just right. 

    Lighting for space, place, exhibit and live performance; color theory; collaboration; critical thinking; creative problem solving and devising cross-disciplinary generative new works.
